CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Jonathan Joestar
CANON: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
HISTORY: Ta-daaah

STRENGTHS: Kind - In every meaning of the word, Jonathan seeks to be a 'Gentleman'- kind and just, charming and polite, considerate of others and aware of his own manners. To be a gentleman is more than just acting the part however, and Jonathan quite thoroughly embodifies that matter. When it comes to his inner personality Jonathan is incredibly kind, and positive, with the tendency to cast doubt on himself before doubting another to that end. When encountering the thugs of Ogre Street as a strong example, he assumes that those attacking him would have families of their own, and therefore employs only the amount of strength necessary to knock them back when he could easily have killed them. His care and concern for those around him stretches far, and very often to those who do not even deserve it- Dio of course comes to mind- but for the most part ends in allies rather than enemies. His care is so strong that he even cries over Dio's seeming death- the same tears he cried for his Father, and for his teacher, and the tears he cries even while dying to hold Dio's head in his arms.

Clever - For all that it can be joked that Jonathan makes some dumb decisions, he's fairly intelligent; aside from matching many of his opponents in wits as well as strength, adapting to battle with swiftness required to turn things in his favor. He keeps himself aware of his opponent's actions- including their attitudes, something that many others simply wouldn't bother with. Without a doubt, he's no fool- heck, he's smart enough to have canonically worked on an archaeology degree and conducted his own research with the Stone Mask- research that had the masks capabilities determined almost entirely but for the unknown vampiric result (which of course, would have required actually placing on a person to discover as is).

Dedicated/Honorable - It comes as no surprise that Jonathan carries a certain level of dedication and honor in his actions- one could argue there is an aspect of pride to it all (killing Dio in particular prompted him to admit it as a matter of revenge, chiefly in the spirit of those Jonathan knew personally), but for Jonathan it is absolutely a genuine feeling. Jonathan's honor is if anything a way of life. This ultimate and honor-bound dedication burns with a strength that Dio recognizes as an 'explosive power', a fuel for what it takes to press through each and every situation without losing his very self. It brings little to no hesitation in the face of fear and adversity, ensuring that not only will he simply come right back once pushed to the brink, but that he'll focus his sights on what needs to be done.

FLAWS: Self-Sacrificing - ...Unfortunately, where dedication becomes sacrifice, Jonathan more than easily jumps across the line. Often without hesitation. When the full scale of Dio's terrifying new form is seen in his home, Jonathan charges through the flames of their burning childhood home even with a spear in his shoulder to face the vampire, focused entirely on the task at hand. He spurs the flames higher and hotter, drawing Dio into combat while believing truly that he and Dio will both die right there; and if it means preventing Dio's terror, it is well worth it. This sense of self-sacrifice is seen again when he truly is upon his deathbed, his throat pierced by Dio's eye-beams and the ship overrun with the undead. With the last ounce of strength he has, he prevents his wife Erina's demise by unleashing a final attack upon Dio's servant- and when this results in the ship's mechanisms seizing and preparing to explode, he insists Erina live on without him. Not only for herself, but for the single other survivor on board- an infant nearby, whose mother was just killed in the onslaught. As he puts it in his fight against Speedwagon- as long as the one he's trying to save can be saved, it is worth injury. (Though of course, death is typically the Last Resort what with it being...well. Death.)

Trusting - One would expect of course, for 'Trust' to be something of a positive trait- but for Jonathan unfortunately it's very much one of his flaws as well. Naive to a fault he is, seeing too much of the good in others than can be safe. The most glaring example is his treatment of Dio for much of the early series; even with the events of their childhood, Jonathan seeks to try and see Dio as a good brother, as something of a friend. He laments the fact that he can't years later in fact, even though this very caution around Dio is what allows him to (sort of) save his father. And naturally of course, he's very quick to trust those he encounters as well- Speedwagon, who nearly had him killed in their first encounter. Zeppeli, who was at the time just a strange man in a suit punching him in the gut. And ultimately, if his belief in Bruford at the end of their fight had been even slightly unwarranted, he would have absolutely been at risk again. Truly, Jonathan presumes too much good in those who show him goodness.

Unorthodox Thinking - For all that Jonathan is clever, he's in possession of a fairly dreadful trait that seems to plague many JoJo protagonists; specifically, a bizarre lapse of judgement that leads to foolhardy and risky decisions which really shouldn't work at all but somehow DO. Some of these can of course be linked to his willingness to weather damage and injury to get to an ultimate goal. Others to his naive trust in the goodness of people's hearts. Ultimately however, many of these decisions are just...Weird and questionable decisions, that aren't at all helped by how his train of thought and out-loud-narration habits run. Taking the test of the wineglass against Jack the Ripper; seeking out air pockets beneath the rocks of the river while fighting Bruford; even using roses against Dio, are all decisions that Seem like they really shouldn't work, and frankly would have spelled his end if they failed, but he sure did go for it anyway while no one around him kne what was going on.

CANON ABILITIES: Still Less Wild than Stands

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Jonathan Joestar
AGE: '20'...Give or take a Century
GRADE: Technically he'd be an Undergrad Student, but mostly he's just following people around and researching into what he missed the last 100 years.
AU BACKSTORY:
  • For the most part the same as canon, the story goes as such; heir to the Joestar family, Jonathan grew up without a mother. At 12, his father adopted Dio Brando as per an oath to the boy's father, resulting in the Worst Few Weeks of Jonathan's life...For a While. It was only those weeks however- for the next 7 years after, life with Dio would be...Normal.
  • But he would never be able to reconcile with the doubts instilled by the experience enough to consider Dio a friend; a good feeling to live by, since Dio started poisoning Jonathan's father. Jonathan discovered a letter which gave him a hunch toward this, and successfully took the suspected poison to analyze, leading him to Ogre Street in London.
  • We know the story; Jonathan meets Speedwagon, and gets the antidote to the poison. When Dio is cornered over the matter, he puts upon his face a mask that inflicts the curse of vampirism, springing a tragedy that ends in the death of Jonathan's father, and nearly his own. In the aftermath Jonathan is reunited with his beloved Erina and introduced to Will Zeppeli, who trains him in the art of Hamon to defeat Dio.
  • And defeat him he does, or so it seems- after chasing the man to Windknight's Lot and facing a few zombies risen by Dio's power, Jonathan seemingly defeats him, though the journey costs them Zeppeli's life. Peace is restored, and Jonathan weds his dear Erina before ultimately setting off for America for their honeymoon.
  • At which point it all goes skyward. Dio lived- a head, and nothing more. While he does not apparently succeed in taking Jonathan's body, he successfully kills the man; the ship they're upon left to explode, while Erina is able to escape with a single surviving infant from the many passengers that are now dead.
  • Dio however, ultimately succeeded in separating the dead Jonathan's head from his body, taking it as his own...and Jonathan's spirit, as if sensing the cruel fate that would therefore await his descendants, was unable to move on. It was as they both had said; their fates were entwined, bound together as 'one'. Though unaware and 'asleep' in a sense, Jonathan Joestar...refused to die.
  • And so his spirit lingered. Lingered, silent and unmoving, only subconsciously reaching for those attached by blood. It would not be until the vampire's death, that the spirit stirred completely; as Dio's remains broiled in the sun of the desert, Jonathan's spirit- even now unable to pass on in peace- fled and clung to the nearest living thing that did not seem to have full thought.
  • Unfortunately that thing was a mere fruit bat. The size of a man's palm, and absolutely an animal. For a few weeks it acted like one as well; Jonathan's spirit was not completely 'awake', the stagnance of a century throwing him off incredibly. Ultimately it took a large amount of time before he was even able to regain proper thought. But with thought came memory, and with memory...understanding.
  • The world was different; the years had passed, and without a doubt his friends were all gone. Enter the Speedwagon Foundation. Over time as Jonathan began to recover himself, he began to re-learn and re-master what he'd known as a human being. Unorthodox as it was, he was quite literally an animal utilizing hamon. Unheard of, completely! Thus, the foundation had to investigate.
  • Everyone involved was Very Alarmed and Very Shocked. Extremely Shocked, actually. Though Jonathan had the option to remain with the Foundation, an anonymous request to instead give him the offer of another location was given, with the idea that he could act freely while still remaining protected; Daybreak Academy had plenty of research that Jonathan would be able to look into, and it was far more an 'open' location than the Foundation's hide-away. That was the excuse at least.
  • Suffice to say, Jonathan never actually saw the one who gave the tip, but perhaps that Someone thought it best that if they couldn't be there for the ones they cared for, maybe someone else could.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Jonathan is more or less the same as in canon, though perhaps a little less...I don't want to say assertive but perhaps less 'punchy' for obvious reasons. Stuck with the body of something smaller than his original hand was, he needs to be far more adaptive to things, and has to therefore step back and take in a situation a lot more. Doesn't stop him from being a bit of an idiot in a fight though.

That said, there is a certain level of subdued guilt he carries, one part for the legacy Dio wrought (and the legacy that he himself effectively cursed), and another for how very long it took for him to even regain his own senses. The result is that everything compounds to make him far more likely to step in directly and far more likely to instead play helpful-mentor who isn't sure about their advice.

RACE: Ghost In A Bat. Egyptian Fruit Bat to be precise! Cute
SECRET SOCIETY: He used to...Sort of be a Hunter? He wasn't part of anything, he just sort of got sucked in and then Died. And now he's arguably property of the Speedwagon Foundation so that's a thing.

POWERS: Hamon, or Ripple, is effectively taking the power of the sun and of life within the body and harnessing it against the undead. It can certainly be used against other things, but it's meant to be used against the undead. In Daybreak's case, this is even more precise; it's the weaponization of candle flame. The trade-off is generally that it Is the candle ability; and as a whole it's pretty damn flexible. The only real necessity is that Jonathan breathe, and breathe steadily; for the breath controls the flow of blood through his body, and the flow of life and energy and flame from there. It can be carried through metal, and string, employed like a rapier and filled with potential.

At this point though, it mostly means that Jonathan can turn himself into a flying bullet of pain for anything undead.

Also he can talk. No one is really sure how he can do that.

(No he doesn't have a Stand. What are those anyway! He never heard of those!)

HOUSING: There's no real preference but also he's just a teeny tiny bat so he could easily go to...Anyplace...

Maybe Jolyne's dorm? maybe jolyne's dorm but seriously even faculty can claim him if they want, he's the size of a mouse

    RP SAMPLE
    INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT

    1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES SINCE GRADUATING. Well, I of course did not graduate from Daybreak, but I did complete my degree while in England. I actually wrote a thesis on an artifact from South America, which I suppose is where much of this all started... ...Well. The story is far too long for this sort of interview I fear, so I'll not draw things out too much. What I can say however, is that it was quite an eventful time!

    2. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO RETURN TO DAYBREAK ACADEMY? While I did not attend Daybreak in my youth, I was referred to the facility by those of the Speedwagon Foundation; they claimed that it would be easier to re-acquaint myself with modern matters, without having to shut myself in too thoroughly...from what I have heard, there are things far more strange than talking bats here, after all!

    3. WHAT KIND OF TASKS DO YOU WANT OR EXPECT TO DO HERE? Truthfully, I'm not entirely certain there will be too many things I can be helpful in...from what I have heard, topics of education have changed significantly since I last attended, so I'm quite behind. I can of course, offer some mild combative advice, but otherwise I suspect I shall be the student far more often than the teacher...

    5. WOULD YOU BE COMFORTABLE WITH MENTORING CURRENT STUDENTS OR ACTING IN AN ADVISORY ROLE? While I cannot speak to any past experience, it is most certainly a duty I would not turn down if it was asked of me. There is much to be said about having access to proper support, and positive influences I feel- in fact, I believe it can make the difference between a gentleman, and a man of true evil.

    6. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SCHOOL TO PROVIDE TO ITS STUDENTS? I believe...that above anything, a student should feel safe. A place of learning, any kind of learning, will bring all sorts of stresses upon the student body; these are stresses that may not necessarily be so easy to cast aside, either- things brought from outside the grounds, or even caused within it.

It should be the duty of the faculty and those maintaining the school, to prevent that as much as possible- to make the school a safe place, where one can ask, and learn, and grow. If one fears where they are meant to learn about the world, then what will this say to them, of the world around them?

    7. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT, ACTING OUT, OR OTHERWISE AT ODDS WITH PARTS OF SCHOOL LIFE? There can be reasons for many things- rather than acting with violence, or anger, it would be best to take calm steps to determining the source of a dilemma- perhaps there is something that can be done to make life more comfortable, or perhaps a solution to any current struggles- if a matter can be settled with conversation, then it is only proper to do so.

    11. IF YOU COULD TELL CURRENT STUDENTS ONE THING ON GRADUATING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?. There can truly, be no telling what the future will bring. What comes may be good- what comes may be bad. The best way to prepare for it, is to do what you can to be that goodness in the world- not just in your own actions, but in finding ways to recognize where it is needed. Follow your hearts- find what you are best at, and find what you are weakest in as well, and work to better yourself in all ways that you can. The world is vast, and unknown- but even if you do not feel ready for it, you are.

    12. DESCRIBE ONE OF THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES YOU HAD AFTER GRADUATION. My wedding...no, I'm serious, truly..! While it was a number of months after, I was wed to my wife, Erina, after graduation! She was a childhood friend, and we managed to re-meet only a few days after I had completed my university thesis. It was an absolutely wonderful day- the proceedings were perhaps smaller than people may have expected, but truthfully, it was an event best shared with those I was close to.

    13. DESCRIBE ONE OF THE NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES YOU HAD AFTER GRADUATION. I... ...Truthfully, I'm not certain my first thought is...appropriate for this...

...I can speak of something else? Oh thank goodness- Ah...I would say then that the easiest matter to speak about is likely what became of the subject of my thesis. I had known that the mask reacted to blood- but I had no idea that what followed would be...well. Vampirism. To consider how much could have changed, if such a cursed thing was destroyed instead of studied...it sends shivers down my spine...

    16. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF ACADEMY FACULTY IS PROTECTING STUDENTS FROM THAT WHICH MIGHT DO THEM HARM. THIS APPLIES TO GRADUATES AND ASSISTANTS AS WELL. TELL US HOW EQUIPPED YOU ARE TO DO THIS. While I am no longer in posession of my true body of course, I am still very much trained in 'Hamon'- a very unique art that utilizes breathing to generate life energy...though I've of course been told that this is directly connected to 'Candle' flames! I will need to learn quite a bit myself, it seems...

...Regardless- while my body differs now, I have spent quite some time adjusting my techniques to this form; when it comes to combating the undead, and even other forces, I am absolutely capable of putting up a proper fight.
